Author

J.F. Lawrence writes science fiction and apocalyptic novels for readers who want their entertainment to come with something to think about. His stories explore deep personal and societal questions, and his characters face hardships that are designed to challenge both them and the reader.

Lawrence brings a distinctive voice to the genre, one shaped by a life lived at full intensity and a commitment to honest storytelling. Before turning to fiction, Lawrence accumulated a remarkably varied career: stacking wood, conducting research in Antarctica, serving as a professor at Stanford, and founding multiple startups. That restless curiosity, along with a lifelong love of D&D, geophysics, and drawing spaceships, infuses his work with an authenticity that resonates with fans of hard sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction alike. Lawrence writes openly about living with chronic illness and the ways it shapes both his life and his craft. When brain fog keeps him from the keyboard, he turns to digital art to stay creative.

He is based in the United States and can be found online at jflawrence.com.

    METAL

Terrance Mathison, a veteran turned bioengineer, returns from a camping trip to find that a widespread pathogen is quickly rusting important metals once they’re touched. Amid the crumbling downfall of our technological society, he assembles a team of super-nerds and elite soldiers to find and secure a lab in hopes of developing a cure. As cities collapse and food supplies dwindle, Mathison and his team navigate an increasingly savage world. He has to decide what lengths he will go to for a cure. Lawrence’s novel asks the question, “How do we survive without metals?” METAL may appeal to those who enjoyed the Arisen Series and Jurassic Park. Scientific Grounding: For this project, the author learned from experts in the rapidly growing fields of microbially induced corrosion, biohacking, bioengineering, and infectious diseases. While METAL was vetted by spec-ops veterans, some liberties were taken because of the backdrop of rusting.

Our interview with J.F. Lawrence

July 8, 2026

Good to meet you, J.F. Lawrence. Before we dig into craft, I want to know the human first. Describe your writing life today. Where do you write, when do you write, and what's around you when you do?

Thanks for asking. On most days, I wake up early, head to my closet-sized office, and sit down to write while my brain is still fresh. I do my best work when I'm closed in there without distractions. When I put on my noise-canceling headphones, I might as well be on a different planet, which my mind sometimes is.

Let's get reflective for the home stretch. If your sixteen-year-old self read your latest book, what would they understand about you that you've never said out loud?

That's a hard question to answer. I'm a pretty open book, so my younger self would have a hard time finding something I haven't mentioned at one point or another. I can tell you that they'd hate to read about my main character, Ryan Char, in DAY AFTER INFINITY, who I torture every bit as much as my chronic illness tortures me. Knowing about that future would suck! I think he'd be glad to know that life can still be good despite my illness.

Before we get into the work, paint me a picture of the writer. What do you do that isn't writing that makes you a better writer?

In a word, consistency. I plug away at writing every day. It's like anything, really. With enough practice, you'll get better. I didn't say good. I just said better.
