Hard sci-fi · Post-apocalyptic · Young Adult

Ex-Professor, ex-Entrepreneur

PUB.co, Digital Art

Growing up, I told stories through D&D, drawing, painting, sculpting, and more.

As a Ph.D. student, and then as a professor at Stanford, I studied geophysics and wrote technical papers about the Earth.

As an entrepreneur, I learned how to write with empathy and to cater my words to an audience.

When I became chronically ill in 2018, I began writing science fiction as an outlet for my creativity and as an escape from my body.

Our interview with J.F. Lawrence

What kind of email or message from a reader would actually make your week?

Getting feedback from readers is like getting a room full of gold bricks. For a reader to take the time to send me a message about liking or even disliking my book means I affected someone enough that they'd take the time out of their busy life to reach out. They read my words. They felt something. That's amazing.

Good to meet you, J.F. Lawrence. Before we dig into craft, I want to know the human first. Describe your writing life today. Where do you write, when do you write, and what's around you when you do?

Great question. I usually write in my tiny office, a space about six-feet by six feet. It would feel claustrophobic, if I didn't have a giant window with a view. The small, uncluttered space helps me focus. As for when, I tend to write in the morning while my brain is focused. With my health condition, my brain often fades by noon.
